Japan Video Game
Hunting 2023 |
|
|
After all this pandemic and other crazy madness going on in this world, it is about time to forget the bad and focus on the essentials! The time is right to jump on the plane and do what I can do best, visit old and track down new retro game stores all over Japan. I can already hear my buddy Scorpion screaming at me from that small island nation - "Get over here!" |

Hunting 2019/2020 |

This was maybe my craziest idea to go to Japan at the turn of the year. I never did it before, knowing the overcrowded public trains and places will be reality. But at the same time I always try to find out, what is the best season for vg hunting(?). Hyped by many (Hard Off) youtube videos and tracking down all thouse locations, I was ready for another adventure! Here comes a review to (V)ideo (G)ame hunting 19/20. A journey to the east, featuring Surugayas and Potato |

AKIHABARA 2008 |

Autumn 2008 was best opportunity so far for shopping in Japan. Japanese Yen was really weak and Euro very strong. Also in 2008 Tokyo Game Show was moved (the one and only time) from the second half of September to the 9-12th of Octobe |

UPDATE 2019.03.10 -> Back from Japan!
Tokyo
First station Tokyo Akihabara. I changed our schedule to stay 1/2 of a first day in Tokyo to be able to visit Neo Geo Land in THE CONTAINER, because it's suppose to be closed at february 20th. Later we found out that the store was still open as we came back from our round trip back to Tokyo on 27.02.
I got only view things from the store, knowing that the most items there are just overpriced and not worth to buy. Although that cotton loaded Hanten was not bad and worth it to get. We also tried that expensive Gashapon (¥500). I got Kyo!
Kita-Kyushu (Kokura Station)
To Surugaya Game Specialty store in Aru Aru City, at Kokura station, we got earlear as planned. Due to the bad weather on that day we had to adjust our schedule. After all, it was good idea to spend time indores instead of going to Miyajima island. The store just opened a year or two ago and I had to include this one on my schedule. Also Kukura station is famous for are bronze statue of Captain Harlock, Maetel and Tetsuro from Galaxy Express 999.
Hard Off (Miyajimaguchi)
This store had not much to offer but prices were ok. ¥2.000 (€16+tax) for a loose av famicom in good shape, but I left it there. My friend also did not wanted to have it. They also had two light gun games new and factory sealed. Time Crisis 4 and Gun Survivor 2. I'm a RE fan, so I desided to get GS2. Even I got already a loose version of this game just a day before at Surugaya for ¥500. Later I also got Gun Survivor 3 & 4 for the PS2 making the collection complete(?). Even those games are not the best, they came complete and very cheap.

Osaka (DenDenTown)
We visited DenDenTown on the second day in Osaka by taking a train to the Namba Station. At Evening streets were pretty crowded, I still not desided yet to get (or not) that "defect" PS1 SCPH-3005. While waiting for our order at Ramen store, I went out and bought it for ¥300 (€2,50+tax).
Surugaya (Takatsuki)
Near the Takatsuki station (between Kyoto and Osaka) is another Surugaya store that's specialized in used games and other stuff like anime DVD Blu-Ray and soundtracks. To get there you have to take a train ether from Kyoto or Osaka. The store has a little bit from everything and the condition is varying. Here we picked two loose Super Famicom Jr. with 1 controller for about 38€ each. I also had to leave there ParaParaParadise complete in box for ¥600 (5€+tax) :/ that was to big.
Akamon (Nagoya)
Nagoya has Akamon and Akamon has Potato, Meikoya and Mandarake. Potato in Nagoya is the best Potato (in terms of condition) for me. This shop, was in fact the only one that really cared about PS1 games as I remember. Really good selection and most games come with obi! But also other stuff like soundtracks, game books or even a junk corner that always has something interesting (.. ok thats sounds so weird, but you know what I mean :D ). Meikoya in the other hand have a quite good selection of hardware. At my previous visit, I got a white boxed PC Engine in very good condition there. And of course as usual I also had not so much time to check every corner of the shop, so I left it without any gets. But from Potato :) The only complain about Potato in Nagoya -> Their shop baskets are to small!

Tokyo (last station Akihabara)
This trip was almost coming to an end. By the time I had already problems carrying my luggage. It had a little bit overweight ^^ That was also the reason, why I almost have no photos from Akamon in Nagoya. In Tokyo we had plans to visits some stores outside Akihabara, but as always other plans came up, like meeting friends and going with them to Izakaya. Including a hangover on the next morning XD. So I scapt the idea.. maybe for good! -> overweight
Last get's in Akihabara and as usual a short visit at Furendzu!
